In this article, I am going to be addressing a very important issue with respect to nutrition for the elderly.

If you are elderly yourself, or if you have an elderly parent, family member or friend, then I am sure that you are well aware that as people age, they have trouble walking.

My mother is 94 years old at the time of this writing, and she can no longer walk without the use of a cane or walker, and many of the elderly people who live in her condominium complex are in the very same condition.

Why can’t elderly people walk the way they once did?

Did you know that your body loses about 1% of its muscle mass every year after the age of 25?

If you didn’t – you are probably as amazed as I was when I discovered this fact.

Your body – all of our bodies! – actually begin to decline after the age of 25!

This loss of muscle mass is called sarcopenia, and it is part of the aging process.

Typically, between the ages of 25 and 70 – the human body loses 40% of its muscle mass.

My mother, who used to weigh 125 pounds, now weighs less that 95 pounds because she has lost half of her muscle mass.

Without muscle mass, her legs cannot bear the weight of her body, and the result is, my mother can no longer walk.

 

Let’s Look at a Very Key Passage from a Book Called “Why Diets Are Failing Us”

Peter Greenlaw and Dr. Dennis Harper have recently published a book entitled, “Why Diets Are Failing Us”, in which they explain why the failure rate for most diets is over 90%. In one section of the book, they address the issue of nutritional needs, and, specifically, nutrition for the elderly to counteract the loss of muscle mass.

 

The body begins to lose about 1% of muscle mass per year after the age of 25, and this mass is replaced with fat. Classic sarcopenia amounts to an approximate 40% loss of muscle mass between the ages of 25 and 70, resulting in fraility and drastic changes in metabolism.
